PERIOD 1

Responsibilities and Obligations

How to Use Have to, Must, Can, Can’t

We can use we can use “have/has to”, “can”, “can’t” to talk about the responsibilities and obligations.

• Affirmative:
[S + have/has to/can/must + Vinf…]

Ex: I have to be in class at 7 a.m. everyday.

• Negative:
[S + do/does + NOT + have to + Vinf…]
[S + can/must + NOT + Vinf…]

Ex1: You don’t have to submit the report this week.
Ex2: You can’t call me at midnight.

• Question:
[(Wh-Question) + do/does + S + have to + Vinf … ?]
[(Wh-Question) + can/must + S + Vinf … ?]

Ex1: What do I have to do for the exam?
Ex2: Can I go there tomorrow? 

Practice

Talk with Andy about the obligations or responsibilities in the following places:

• In a cinema.
• In a class.
• At workplace.

Ex: In a cinema, you have to keep silent. You can’t talk too much. You can’t take photos…

• Affirmative sentences: something

• Negative sentences: nobody, anywhere

Ex2: I do not go anywhere.

• Question sentences: anywhere
Ex: Do you know anywhere to visit around Can Tho City?

Practice

Talk with Andy. Give advice to the following situations:

• Andy is sick.
• Andy is stressful.
• Andy is hungry.
• Andy is bored.

Ex: You are sick. You should drink medicine. You should not stay up late. You should find something to eat… 

Production

• You give advice to a sick friend.
• You give advice to your friend’s exam.
